DNA Hair Testing Used To Find Killer in Annie Le Case

Raymond Clark III – an animal research technician – is currently standing trial for the murder of Yale University graduate, Annie Le, with whom he shared a laboratory.

Although Clark's lawyer claims that his client will plead not guilty to the murder, Raymond Clark remains the only suspect in the tragic killing of Annie Le, whose body was discovered on what was scheduled to be her wedding day. By all accounts, Annie Le was a popular and friendly Yale graduate student who had the world at her feet. Nevertheless, for some hitherto unknown reason, Annie Le was killed by traumatic asphyxiation and her body was found on the 13th September 2009, having been missing for five days.

As part of an extensive police investigation, DNA hair testing was performed in addition to DNA tests of saliva and fingernails, which were taken from Annie Le's body. Following the DNA hair testing, police arrested Raymond Clark in a motel room the very next day. Nevertheless, despite the fact that Clark remains the only suspect in Annie Le's death and that the hair testing and other such tests prompted police to charge the individual with her murder, the outcome of the forthcoming trial remains uncertain and, equally, the results of the DNA tests that were carried out remain undisclosed. Indeed, the DNA hair testing results are not expected to be released to the public until the trial is fully underway.

In consideration of these facts, it is important to remember that Raymond Clark is presumed innocent until proven guilty and that the trial will ultimately determine his fate. Notwithstanding this, the police investigation so far has gathered together more than 100 individual pieces of evidence taken from the crime scene (although not necessarily where Annie Le was murdered) and DNA tests on hair, saliva and fingernails are likely to establish the identity of the murderer. Indeed, huge steps forward have been made in the field of forensic DNA testing over the last decade, so the accuracy of serious criminal investigations has improved significantly. No longer is it the case that juries must only rely on their assessment of witness statements and known facts – DNA profiling provides a precise picture of who was where and what they were doing. For instance, semen analysis is often used to establish the identity of rapists.

DNA Hair Testing Evidence

Furthermore, DNA hair testing is used to provide reliable evidence in criminal investigations as it outlines who was present at a crime scene. Requiring the root of a single hair, DNA hair testing can establish the DNA profile of an entire human being. Apart from criminal investigations, DNA hair testing is commonly used to settle paternity claims, whilst it is also employed to detect the presence of various substances in the body, including heavy metals. Furthermore, DNA testing of saliva and fingernails can provide all the genetic evidence necessary in order to establish a complete DNA profile of an individual.

Thus, DNA samples would have been taken from Annie Le's corpse and then sent back to the forensic laboratory for analysis. Any foreign DNA (not belonging to Annie Le) would be tested to establish the genetic makeup of any individual who came into physical contact with the victim (and who left evidence). Certain people, such as police investigators at the crime scene, may be excluded from any results obtained from the samples, whilst all others would be considered suspects.
